GOD IS IN THE DETAIL
Mies van der Rohe claimed that “God is in detail”. I find sourcing interior elements such as hinges for main doors, door handles, window sashes are so important to achieving the right overall look. The above photo is representative of the level of detail going into the restoration of Sussex House. The door handles, hinges, sash window catches and rim locks are original refurbished pieces. The antique brass patina will be replicated throughout the house even on elements such as new ‘traditional’ style radiator valves. Often new pieces come lacquered, the process of removing lacquer is both expensive and time-consuming but ultimately worth it
The wide Georgian pine planks will replace more recent or damaged boards in the main master bedroom, office and parts of the ground floor. The original Georgian pine floor on the ground floor has boards of a narrower width. These boards will have to be carefully sawn to replicate the narrow boards on the ground floor, where boards have been damaged.
