REFURBISHING A PAIR OF OSVALDO BORSANI LOUNGE CHAIRS

DSCF1442.jpg

I purchased these two chairs a year ago in Rome.  They came from a house sale and are attributed to famed Italian designer Osvaldo Borsani.  The chairs were made in the late 1940's and were in a very poor state of repair, the original velvet was worn and the horse-hair stuffing was poking through in places.

I sent the chairs to upholster Barry Wells in Newhaven.  Barry works for local antique dealers and luxury clients such as The Dorchester Hotel.  He's a perfectionist that uses traditional methods of upholstery involving  a range of complex techniques rooted in different periods.  Using elements such as springs, natural fibre (horsehair, wool, hessian, vegetable and cotton felt), this technique involves craftsmanship, precision and a good eye for a perfect and enduring finish.  I chose a Paul Smith fabric by Maharam.  The chairs look amazing and will bring colour and style to Sussex House.
